How to add in progress issues to a future sprint?

Juan C Rosique September 27, 2022

I am reorganizing our team and recently started implementing sprints.  Several issue tickets are being worked on that do not show up on the backlog but I need to put them into a future sprint.

How can I do this?

As always, any help is highly appreciated.

If an issue is not in the backlog, it can't be added to a sprint - it's not being selected by your board for action.

Why are the issues not showing in your backlog?

Hi Nic,

That's what I do not know.  Maybe some lousy configuration in Jira.  I recently took over, and they never used Jira correctly, like a help desk ticketing system.

I have seen that if an issue is in an "In Progress" status, they do not show in the Backlog, which makes sense as they are being worked on and should not be considered backlogged items. Still, I need to reorganize this, and the only way I can is to get all these straggler tickets into a manageable sprint.  Do I make sense?

If someone can tell me how I can configure the backlog to show all pending items, I think that will solve my problem.

Boards (and their backlogs) are driven by a selection criteria.  In some cases this is a simple search for "project = <something>", but you can build them on top of far more sophisticated searches if you want.

So the first think to look at is the board selection - go to board config, and the general settings and look at the board's "filter" - what does that say?

Check this because the behaviour you are describing could be being caused by a bad filter like "project in (x, y, z) and status in (to-do, doing, done)" where your issues can have an "in progress" status.

Second, look at the columns part of the board.  Are all the status mapped into columns?  (especially your in-progress status)

Hi Nic,

Thank you!  That did it.  I am now able to see all issues.  You were correct, the filter in the board was missing two mapped statuses.  I can proceed accordingly now.

Again, thank you very much for your assistance.
