How to configure Time in Status gadget

Rick Love July 8, 2025

Hi,

How can we configure the Time to Status gadget to exclude the Approved, Backlog and Merged statuses?

I'm being told this gadget is non-configurable.

Thanks

Hi @Rick Love ,

Above, you've already mentioned that you're trying to use the Average Time in Status gadget natively in Jira. When configuring the gadget, simply click once with the left mouse button to select the status you want to display. If you’d like to display multiple specific statuses, hold down the CTRL key (or Cmd on Mac) while clicking to select only the ones you need — no need to include all statuses.

As a quick tip, my team developed the Time in Status app, which might also be helpful. It allows you to add gadgets directly to your Jira dashboard, offering a range of visual and tabular reports, such as Time in Status, Assignee Time, Average Time, Status Entrance Date, Status Count, Transition Count, and Time in Status per Date.

Hi @Rick Love

Welcome to the community.

Which gadget are you referring to, as Jira has no Time in Status ootb.

Rick Love July 8, 2025

I'm not sure then.  It's called Time in Status, but I was told it was ootb.

I'll go back to the creator.

Hi @Rick Love

Jira has ootb, the gadget "Average Time in Status" are you using this one?

I think not, as in this one you can specify which statuses you want to show.

I'm assuming it's that one since it is the average time in status.

Is that one easy enough to configure to include/exclude status?

I want to exclude Backlog and Merge at least.

Hi @Rick Love

Not sure if the desired functionality is available out of the box. If you would be interested in a mktplace app for this requirement, you can try out

Time in Status Reports

The app allows to view time in status of all the issues, with the ability to view only certain statuses as well.

With this app you generate time in each workflow status for multiple issues with multiple filter and grouping options. The app has 20+ reports to meet a variety of use cases.

More details here.

Hello @Rick Love

We assume you're referring to a time in status Jira dashboard gadget. If you're open to using a third-party app, I can recommend the Timepiece  gadget from the Timepiece - Time in Status for Jira app, developed by our team at OBSS.

While there isn’t a separate “exclude statuses” setting in the gadget, you can achieve the same result by simply selecting only the statuses you want to display.

Just pick the statuses you'd like to see on the gadget, and the rest (such as Approved, Backlog, Merged) won’t be shown at all.

Here’s what the gadget setup and time in status duration  report  look like:

Alternatively, if you need more control like truly excluding certain statuses from time calculation  you can generate a Duration Between Statuses (DBS) report inside the Timepiece app.

 DBS reports allow you to:

  • Measure duration between two key statuses (e.g. In Progress → Done)

  • Exclude  statuses like Backlog or Approved

Let me know if you’d like help setting this up or want to explore other reporting options we offer!

If you'd like to explore this solution further, feel free to check out Timepiece on the Atlassian Marketplace page.

Hope it helps

Ayça
