How to do capacity planning in Jira?

Every quarter we need to plan Engineering capacity to commit if we can deliver the requirements from different departments. Is there any tool or plugin that can simplify the job of capacity planning?

We use google sheets for this purpose but looking for a solution in Jira.

If you consider using a plugin I would suggest ActivityTimeline. ActivityTimeline provides resource planning and availability on a timeline view.

You can track tasks progress, workload, and availability for your Engineering team or particular employee taking into consideration the part-time, full-time, or even different work schemes for users, and holidays. You can integrate it with external calendars as well.

With Advanced roadmaps (available on Jira Premium), capacity planning feature is available.

We have also built an app for the same use case. 

Capacity Planner

The app allows to store the capacity for individual users and save as templates. which can be mapped to a sprint to track the allocation.

What subscription plan do you have for Jira? With the Premium subscription there is built in functionality called Advanced Roadmaps which includes capacity planning features.

If you are not using the Premium subscription there are multiple third party apps that enhance Jira with capacity planning capabilities.

The tool that will work best for you depends in part on how your work and team members are divided up in Jira, how you estimate your work, and how you estimate your capacity.
