How to import a project using project configurator when project key already existing in new instance. We are going to import a project into a Jira instance where noticed that the same project key is already existing. How can I rename the project key of the Jira project before importing into new Jira instance.

Hey @younoos !

Project Configurator recognises this project already exists in your target instance and if you don't make any changes, your same name project that you exported is going to override the existing one with the changes.

However to be able import your second project and change the name, you would need to export it (XML file) and in that file, change the Project name and Key to be something unique. Then you can import this modified XML to your target instance without it overriding the existing one.

Thank you @Jannina Koskinen

However, when we have exported complete project, how can we make changes to project key. Do we need to change the entities.xml find and replace old key (say 'ABC') with new key (say 'XYZ')?

Can you please refer some document reference for this so that I could follow the steps.

Thanks

Hi @younoos

I’ll suggest you change the name and key from the source instance and download a new export file.

this ensures the name is changed correctly in all sources.

Hi @Ismael Jimoh

Thanks for you reply. You mean, if we  get into Project Setting >> Details >> Update Name & Key would server purpose here.

What would happen to the issue records are already present for the project. Those also get changed?

Thanks

Yes that would serve your purpose.

The change has to be done before taking a backup. You may want to also reindex the index as well to make sure that the data in the database matches accurately.

When you change the project key, JIRA will go through all entries and update it correctly.

All links, entries, e.t.c. for the project will all be updated to the new key ensuring that you do not have the problem.

Regards.
