How to make a custom field read only for an Issue Type?

Krishna P G June 3, 2025

Problem statement

  • Company managed Project: I have an Issue type called "Feature" and I want a custom field "Story Point" to display as Read only(Non editable). In other issue types, it must display Editable mode. Can you please suggest a way to solve this issue. I prefer to solve this without using plugin, if possible.
    Details
  • A custom field by name "Story Points" gets displayed even though this field(Story Point) is not present in the Screen Scheme(Create, Edit, View).
    • I dont know why, but, based on my exploration and reading it does so because it carries a value and Jira cannot control this
  • I have created separate Field Configuration for "Feature" issue type in the Field Configuration Scheme as well.

What has been explored so far?
  • I am Ok to set the Property against each of the status to make this happen.
  • So, I tried this to see if it works against the "Resolved" status present in the workflow for this issue type.
  • I have set the property key and property value respectively as below, but Jira allows to edit this custom field whose custom Id = 10033. I have tried multiple things on trial and error as below, but it is not working so far. I think I am close but still far to find the solution...
    • jira.permission.edit.field.customfield_10033 false
    • jira.permission.edit.field.denied 10033
    • jira.permission.edit.user false
      • This works but is not useful to me as this makes the entire issue read only.

Hi @Carlos Garcia Navarro , the field is appearing in screen even though its not part of Create/Edit/View screens, as I have mentioned. I am not sure, why this happens?

Hence, I had to resort to using property and even thats not working.

I have tried using Scriptrunner plugin to make the field read only, but no luck so far

Hi @Krishna P G ,

Would it work to add the field only to the screen associated with the 'View' action in the screen scheme, while excluding it from the 'Create' and 'Edit' screens, for the specific work item where you want the field to be read-only, as described in the article below?
