How to properly set a custom field in Jira and get the value back in Worklogs ?

Matthieu Braun June 18, 2021

Hello Jira Community,

We just started to set all of projets into Jira.
Our need is to report all our project hours by people and business unit.
We are a company with more than 10 business units.

1) We managed the first step : here is a screen of our custom fied for Business Unit listing :

Ticket Jira screen 1.png

As you can see, it is properly set in the Ticket with many choices.

2) This is how we set it in Jira configuration : is everything OK?
should we keep 3 screens, 1 context (écrans in french) ? what does it means ?

3) back in Worklogs extension on the main report area, we have a long list of Business Unit category and we're a bit lost : it seems we have multiple naming for "business unit"...
How can we clean this list to just keep main the main value Business unit and remove Business Unit ! , Business Unit 2 ... ?

Thanks for everyone who can help us on that

Hello Matthieu

In Worklogs you see the list of all custom fields in Jira, this includes global custom fields as well as custom fields from team-managed projects (used to be called next-gen projects).

In team-managed projects, these fields can be created on a per-project basis. Worklogs will treat it as the same field if they have the same type and name, however as I can see on your screenshot you have fields with different names as well as different types of the Business Unit field (label, single-select, etc.).

The only way to clear this up as far as I am aware is to go through the team-managed projects and make sure this field gets consolidated (it has one name & type).

Regards,

Paweł

P.S. In Worklogs, we are looking into how we can better handle this in the future, to make these global/project fields mixing up less of an issue.

Hi Paweł,

Thanks for sharing your expertise.

It seems we need a bit of cleaning / consistency in the way we have set all projet / field configuration in all our projects portfolio.

We will check.

hi @Matthieu Braun

the fastest way of getting support would be of using customer portal: https://soldevelo.atlassian.net/servicedesk/customer/portal/2

I am not the part of the worklogs team, but I quickly checked your scenario and everything seems to work correctly.

Can you double check that you do not have these custom fields in other schemes?

Thanks Jakub for your fast answer, appreciated.

Sorry, what do you mean by schemes ?

It is possible that while getting our hands on the solution and testing, we added some "Business Unit 2", "Business Unit!" fields in some tickets for testing...
Is that what you mean ?

Checking our ticket to remove those correct?

Yes, exactly.

The issue has been extensively described by Paweł. Jira allows to create custom fields on the global level as well as team-managed projects level.

Thanks Jakub
