How to remove a column for a non-existent status in project board

Sabina January 7, 2022

Hi all!

In my Task-workflow in a simple Jira-project, I used to have a status 'Klaar' ('Done' in English'). Yesterday, I deleted this status from the workflow, and added the status 'Gesloten' ('Closed') instead.

But now, the column for 'Klaar' is still there in the project board (business project). I don't know why.

I only use 1 issue type in this project, so only 1 workflow and that doesn't contain 'Klaar' anymore. It's not possible to drag and drop a card in it, the card bounces back.

I still use Klaar in other projects. In the admin settings > Issues > Statuses, it confirms that Klaar is only used in other projects. As expected.

The workflow:

How can I get rid of the 'Klaar'-column in this board?

Thank you!

Hey @Sabina

You need to go to board configuration and remove it. Also check if there are any status mapped to it and move that status to respective column.

Please check this link on configuring columns in a board https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/configure-columns/

Hi Vishwas,

Thank you for your answer. As far as I know, board configuration is only available in the more advanced scrum/kanban boards in software projects (like the one in this screenshot). I don't see board configuration options in the type of board my question is about (a project board in a business project, that is). I feel like your answer is about another type of board, it looks very different. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Hi @Sabina

Thanks for more info, yes you are correct I did provide a Company Managed Scrum/Kanban board configuration. As I couldn't get information on what type of project board that was in screenshot.

For Business template projects we don't have board configurations so the columns come up based on the status available for workflows used in the particular project. Having said that do we have other issue types in the project with different workflows which might have "Done" Status could be one of the reason.

Let me do some research on this, will get back to you.

Vishwas

Hey @Sabina

I did try to reproduce the issue.

In business project there was one default workflow. I made a copy of that workflow then modified to look similar to your workflow. Then I went to workflow scheme of the project, switched the workflow I created to replace the old workflow and published the workflow scheme, it was asked to map the "done" status to "close". After all this when navigated to board the done column was gone and closed column appeared.

Not sure why this issue occurred to you.

Let's see what is the missing piece that could have resulted in this issue.

Hi Vishwas,

Thank you for trying.

I just tried to copy my current workflow scheme and switch the project to the copied workflow scheme. But that doesn't resolve the issue either. Neither does switching back. It might be a bug?

Sabina January 10, 2022

Hi Vishwas,

Addition to my previous comment: I forgot to also copy the workflow inside the copied workflow scheme. I did that, and changed it slighly (I changed the position of the status labels in the diagram a few pixels). Then I switched the workflow scheme for this project to the copied one, and it worked! The 'Klaar'-column has disappeared. It seems that is was indeed a bug.

Thank you for your help, your scheme switching inspired me to try this ;)

Kind regards,

Sabina

Hi @Sabina

Glad to hear, issue got fixed. Usually publishing the workflow does the trick. But sometime we will never.

Please feel free to accept the answer in case it help you :)

@Sabina , how did you do it, i have not been able to resolve the same problem.

I am new at this, but i don't see where to do the work flow scheme.

i am going to project settings (business project), then go to issue type, then go to Work Flow, ensure that i erase the status I don't want, removed all dependencies, it goes away there with no errors, then when i go to the board, the column status is still there. no matter what I do

Hi @Jorge Gamboa ,

You can find Workflow scheme settings in Settings (the gear icon on the top right on your screen) > Issues > Workflow schemes.

These are the steps I took that solved the problem:

  1. In the current workflow, remove the statuses that you don't want to see in your board view anymore (I think you already took this step)
  2. Copy the current workflow of the project (at Settings > Issues > Workflows)
  3. Adjust the copied workflow slightly by moving one of the statuses a few pixels in diagram view
  4. Copy the current workflow scheme of the project (at Settings > Issues > Workflow schemes)
  5. Replace the workflow in the copied workflow scheme to the new (slightly adjusted) workflow
  6. Assign the new copied workflow scheme (with the copied workflow) to the project

Hope this helps!

Hi

I'm having a similar problem with a team managed project.  I updated the workflow, I changed the name of two of the status and I removed the status "Approved".  However the column for "Approved" is still showing in the board layout.

Hi Sabina - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Did you publish your workflow? Once you publish the workflow, the extra column should go away.

Sabina January 9, 2022

Hi John,

Yes I did. The new workflow is working.
