How to share a project with an external company?

tom.francis July 1, 2021

Hello.

I was wondering if anybody could give me any advice on the problem I am currently facing within Jira. I have created a Jira project and I am wanting to use this project as a sort of template to share with other businesses, that being the custom fields I have created, the dashboard, the workflows, etc.

I was wondering if anyone could let me know whether this is possible or not. And if so, provide some guidance on how I would achieve this.

Thank you in advance.

Tom,

Did you ever find a way to do this? I have the same exact question.

Hi @Larecia Capehart and @tom.francis

We provide a commercial app called Dashboard Hub for Jira (free up to 10 users). Among other benefits (ready-to-go templates to create reporting dashboards, ~70 gadgets/metrics, integrations with 10 products, etc.) it allows you to share externally and securely your dashboards. You can see some sample dashboards here:

Hope this helps!

It sounds like what you’re asking for here is a means of creating a project and allowing a group of people external to your company being able to access only that project. Assuming that’s the case then what you would want to do is add the external users as just like any other user, however, ensure that they only go into a specific group, e.g. company-acme. Make sure that if they end up going into a default group like Jira-users or similar, that you remove them from those groups. Then for the specific project that you’re defining for that simply give them the necessary permissions using this new group that you created.

you also mentioned creating this project as a template. You certainly can do that and then when you create a new project for a new company then just use that project as a template when creating the new project. Again you just have to make sure that you go in and adjust the permissions to align with the specific group that you created for that company.

Hi Jack,

Thank you for your comment it's very helpful.

Is it possible for me to share this project template that I have made with another business so that they can access this on their own Jira account and not through my organization's Jira account? (if that makes sense)

Not sure I follow. Are you wanting to create a project in your instance and then have the customer import into their instance?

Hi @Jack Brickey, that is exactly what I'm looking to do. Could you give me any advice on how I would go ahead doing this, if possible?

There is no way to import a single project. At least out of the box. You might check the marketplace for add-ons that would allow this.
