I created a custom context field for issues that is a number and I would like it to be visible in both the backlog card and the board (I can see and edit the field when I select the card, but it would be great to have it visible on the general board and backlog views).
I fiddled a fair amount with the custom field menu and it is set for all the contexts and screens of my project but this didn't seem to have any effect.

Are you working with a Company Managed project or a Team Managed project?
For Company Managed projects you can add up to 3 fields to the card display in both the Backlog and on the Board through Board Settings > Card Layout.
That option is not available in Team Managed projects yet.
