I have an issue selecting number of approvers in a an approval step within a workflow.

I have created a group called "IT Approver Group". I then created a custom field called Purchase approvers and filtered to the IT approval group.  

When I try to select the group and choose the option "a specific number of people" it errors out as per screenshot below.

You have user filtering on that field, that means it's a single user field? Multiple user fields don't have this option. 

For a single user field, you can only use "Everyone", for # of approvers, since there is max 1 person in the field.

Custom fields come in different flavours, select, text, user,... 
The user type custom field has 2 possibilities: single user picker and multiple user picker. 

Because you have enabled user filtering, I can tell that your field is from the Single user picker type (because you can't do this in the multiple user picker). 

The user filtering does not add all users of the group to the field, it narrows which users you can choose. 
A single user picker allows only 1 user filled in (like a single select field), that's why you can't use "A specific number of approvers" for this field, there can only be 1.  

You can't change the type of a field after you created it, so if you need a multiple user picker, you will need to create a new field, but then you won't be able to narrow it down to a single group (technical limitation from Atlassian).

Thanks for the detailed explanation! That makes a lot of sense to me now. I will just recreate it as a multiple user field.
