I want to execute a subquery!

山口 樹 October 2, 2023

I'm struggling with JQL in JIRA Software Cloud.

One issue I'm facing is the inability to display subtasks of parent tasks with specific fields. Is it not possible to use subqueries in JQL? Is there no way to pull tasks linked to parent tasks as a common use case? Can you please tell me how everyone is structuring their JQL queries?

Hello @山口 樹

Welcome to the community.

Jira does not natively support using the results of one query as input to another query.

If you want to get the subtasks of a specific issue you can do that using the linkedissue() function listed in this document

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/jql-functions/

If you want to use a filter to select tasks dynamically and then use that to get a list of the subtasks associated with those tasks, that will require a third party app. There are several that extend JQL capabilities. I know that the Enhanced Search app from Afaptavist is one of them that I have used before.

Thank you for answer!

Of course, is it still not possible with just JIRA, huh? Adaptavist is the creator of ScriptRunner, isn't it? I came across it during my research, but it seems difficult to use due to the organization's policies. JIRA does feel quite cumbersome to use. Thank you very much! Goodbye.

I'm going to look very pedantic in this paragraph.  Jamie Echlin is the creator of Scriptrunner, but Adaptavist now own and maintain it, since he joined Adaptavist 9-ish years ago.  Jamie is still the lead of the team that supports, maintains, and improves it.

As a customer success person, I want to ask why you feel it is difficult to use, so I can go talk to the SR team about making it easier to use!  (And the same for Jira, I want to tell Atlassian where it could be improved)

SR team?

Thank you!

I recently started using JIRA and have been struggling with various specifications.

At my company, we often use spreadsheets in conjunction with JIRA because there are many things that JIRA alone cannot accomplish. However, integrating these tools has been challenging due to organizational policies.

"SR Team" = the team at Adaptavist responsible for the ScriptRunner product.
