In a KanBan board, is it possible to show empty swimlanes?

David Dean September 19, 2021

I've setup a KanBan board with swimlanes based on assignee name.

This works great for easily showing all the tasks assigned to a particular engineer across all the statuses.

However it makes it very difficult to spot if any member of the team does not have any tickets assigned to them at all across any of the statuses.

Ideally I would like all my team members names listed in the swimlanes with the swimlane showing completely blank if there are no tickets assigned to them.

I tried using queries and setting individual swimlanes per team member by specifying the username directly, but even then if there are no matches the swimlane is hidden.

Is it possible to configure the KanBan board to show empty swimlanes where they are no matches?

Thanks.

If there are no issues assigned to a user then the swimlane will not display. Maybe consider a dummy issue created for all users and just leave in the leftmost column.

Hi @David Dean

Yes, and...to Jack's answer: I wondered about some things that may help you consider solution approaches.

  • What problem are you trying to solve by having this information?  What would you do differently if you had that info now?
  • How large is your team?  Is it so large that during any stand-ups, the team cannot self-organize to figure out who is available to help on other tasks?
  • How often do people speak up if they have capacity to help others/do new work tasks?
  • What would you expect your board to show if multiple engineers paired/mobbed on a task?

Kind regards,
Bill
