Info on Change Requests within Jira

Steven Paugh March 9, 2023

Hello,

We are looking to see if any special licensing is typically needed in order to setup Jira in a way that we can follow typical Change Management workflows. As of now we see this as a Service Management workflow.

My main ask is, how do we use the service management workflows along with our normal Jira task process in order to start tracking and setting a standard for change management (approvers, and so on)? If this is only part of Jira Service Management, then what is the main difference between what I see as Jira, and Jira Service Management in our cloud console?

Thank you!

Hi @Steven Paugh ,

Welcome to the community!

One major difference in Jira Software(JS) and Jira Service Management(JSM) is you would not need licenses for majority of the user. Means they can initiate the Change management ticket/workflow for free. You would need to buy some JSM agents license for users who will be managing your queue.

There is a comprehensive documentation on how to configure your JSM for change management, please refer it here.

Thanks,
Aditya

Hi Aditya,

Thank you so much for the response here. When adding the Change Management workflow in Jira Software. They all show up with a title calling out Jira Service Management. Would we expect any questionable behavior if I were to import this and assign the task type of change to the workflow? I noticed it wants to sync all Jira Software Projects after this and I am a bit concerned this could skew our current tickets in some way.

Thank you!

-Steven

Hello @Aditya Verma

Hope you had a wonderful weekend! Can you possibly provide any insight to my ask above? It's a shame that Jira Support doesn't have a formal path to these questions, so I really appreciate you help here!

Hi @Steven Paugh

If I understand it correctly, you are trying to add an existing JSM Change management workflow against an issue type in your Jira Software Project.

You can do this, just it will ask you to migrate existing tickets to new statuses of your destination workflow.

Since, you are on standard plan you will not have access to a sandbox environment for testing this. As a workaround you can create a new project and add some sample tickets to it and then try moving your workflow. This way you will be able to test the complete change management workflow in your sample project.

Please let me know if this answers your query.

Thanks,

Aditya
