Initiative creation

ganagaraj June 26, 2025

I want to create an initiative as a level above an epic. Everytime I create a level on the hierarchy, The number on the new level is 2 and epic still remains 1 (as indicated in the screenshot below). How do i get initiative to get to level 1? Do i rename epic as initiative?

@ganagaraj Mostly many teams used Initiative as a highest level (means above the Epic) and the Epic is the default level 1. And as Epic is on default level 1 currently there may be work items of type Epic and hold the childs underneath.

Now, if you want to Add Initiative on the Epic lievel 1 and Epic should be on level 2 then you need to add Initiative on level 1 ( so Epic and initiative on the same level 1) move all the Epics to Initiative, so that all the epic become Initiative and remove the Epic from level 1.

After that you can add Epic is on the level 2 above Initiative and Initiative is on the level 1.

BTW, think before making this change as its a global entity and will impact across the project on the site.

If you understood correctly it will impact across all the projects and also, do you want to add Initiative on level 1 ie. the same level as EPIC,  and Epic will be on level 2, correct?

ganagaraj June 26, 2025

yes that is correct. I am aware of the impact, I am just not able to figure out how to link an initiative as a parent to an epic. JIRA is not allowing me to add a parent to an epic as epic is level 1 already.

@ganagaraj  as you stated below...

I am just not able to figure out how to link an initiative as a parent to an epic.

If you want to select Initiative as a parent of Epic then the way you added the work type hierarchy ie Initiative should be on level 2 only. ( as shown in your snap in the main question).

in this case, i dont see any problem for selecting Initiative as a parent for Epic. Just you need to make sure that the Parent field should available on the Epic screen so that the Initiative will be displayed.

Hi @ganagaraj
You need to add issue type "Initiative" to the hierarchy level 1.
Just click on field near Epic (number 1), and choose it on select list (number 2)
