Is there a maximum number of issues that can be reasonably accommodated in a Jira system?

Dan Dickinson February 22, 2019

Aside from the cost of storage, should we be concerned about issue volume if we expect to create millions of issues in a single Data Center instance of Jira? Are there any volume thresholds which, when passed, can cause performance or other usability problems?

What are the largest volume successful installations you've seen?

Hey Dan,

Below are some resources that i think might be useful for you. I can't personally speak to an insane number of tickets (I think I've seen around 500,000), but I can point you towards some performance metrics, and what Atlassian recommends in terms of resources and sizing. I believe Atlassian previously recommended not going above a certain count, but that has been removed.

For example:

This document discusses hardware recommendations at different levels of usage (it is a bit old), but there are plenty of documents out there to help understand the sizing of Jira. Please note that the "Enterprise level" includes 20,000 tickets per month with 1,000,000 total tickets. I know there are organizations using Jira for several million tickets.

There are also performance tests that you can look at to help understand how the speed changes as it grows and different node set ups.

Atlassian also provides some insight into how they configure two production instances, both of which contain at least 500,000 tickets.

Thanks, Kian. This is good info.
