Is there a way to make the Original Estimate field under Backlog View uneditable?

Darcy M March 25, 2025

Hello,

We have created a custom field for the Original Estimates where the original estimate will be in a dropdown view instead of the native field where you enter the value.

And then an automation runs to copy the value from the dropdown to the native Original Estimate so that it will show under Backlog view.

We have also hidden the native field so only the custom field will show up in the screen.

So far, the automations are running smoothly. We choose a time from the drop-down, and then we sum up the estimates to the parent ticket. The problem is that the automation will be overridden if one of our team members would choose to manually edit through the Backlog view and type in a value.

Is there any way to make this field a read-only field? Thank you.

Hi @Darcy M

Welcome to the community,To prevent users from editing the "Original Estimate" field in Jira's Backlog View, you can remove the field from the "Edit Issue" screen and ensure it's only visible in the "View Issue" screen

Another way is If you want to prevent users from editing the field even after it's been set, you can restrict workflow transitions to specific roles or users.
Create a new transition to a status that allows editing of the field, and restrict that transition to administrators or specific roles.

Hope this helps

Hello @Pasam Venkateshwarrao Thank you, I will try this. Another question, I have noticed that the Jira backlog and automation has few issues.

Like whenever we update an existing issues and the automation will run on these hours, it says success and but the fields aren't exactly updating. Sometimes, they would update after a few hours. But these automations for the original estimates and summation run perfectly on newly created issues. Is there any specific reason for that? Thank you!

Hello @Pasam Venkateshwarrao It seems that it's already out of the screens Edit but it's still getting edited. Any idea about this? Thank you!Screenshot_5.pngScreenshot_6.png

@Darcy M In the screen-1 which you have shared in that original Estimate field is there in Edit screen.can you remove in Edit screen and then try Again

Hello @Pasam Venkateshwarrao I'm afraid that you're referring to the Original Estimate custom field where we have the dropdown. Then native Original Estimate is no longer in the screen but it's still being editable on the backlog view.
