Is there a way to show comments in query results?

Ellis_ Kathy February 2, 2024

I don't need to search for specific comments based on text.  I just want to know if there is a way to show any comments on an issue in the query results.

Unfortunately we don't have that feature available in the native Jira functionality.

Because an issue can have multiple comments and it's very difficult to show them in query results and it may become cumbersome.

Hello @Ellis_ Kathy

That is not possible with native functionality in the View all issues screen.

Can you provide more information about your use case? We might be able to suggest an app that would help.

Thanks, but if only possible with an app, we will have to come up with a different idea for how we get to the info we need.

Hi @Ellis_ Kathy

I understand that you're looking for a native solution; the only option that I can think of here is to use Jira Automation to copy over the relevant comment(s) to a custom field (e.g., of type single-line or multi-line text), and then add the custom field to your issue filter view.

If a Marketplace app should become an option for you, you may want to have a look at the app that my team and I are working on, JXL for Jira.

JXL is a full-fledged spreadsheet/table view for your issues that allows viewing, inline-editing, sorting, and filtering by all your issue fields, much like you’d do in e.g. Excel or Google Sheets. It also comes with a number of so-called smart columns that aren't natively available, including the first comment, last comment, and many other comment-related columns.

This is how it looks in action:

As you can see above, you can easily view, sort, and filter by your comment column, and also use it across JXL's advanced features, such as support for (configurable) issue hierarchies, issue grouping by any issue field(s), sum-ups, or conditional formatting.

Any questions just let me know,

Best,

Hannes
