Jira Cloud und Confluence Cloud Architecture

Niklas Wissmüller November 10, 2020

Hi Atlassian Team,

Im very interested in finding out what the current architecture of your jira and confluence cloud products look like. Unfortunately I can only find a detailed architecture of your jira/confluence server product:

https://developer.atlassian.com/server/jira/platform/architecture-overview/

https://developer.atlassian.com/server/confluence/confluence-architecture/

And some general high level Information about the Atlassian cloud architecture:

https://confluence.atlassian.com/cloud/atlassian-cloud-architecture-973494795.html

There are some pretty nice blog posts about the Vertigo project where you provide some information but I havent found a detailed architecture yet. Is there a possability you can provide one?

Best regards

Niklas

Hello @Niklas Wissmüller

My name is Petter, I'm a support engineer at Atlassian. Hope you are having a nice day.

Can you confirm if you already receive an answer from Atlassian?

If not, could you please provide us with more specific details of what architecture concepts you're looking for in Jira and Confluence Cloud applications?

As you can see in the documentation below, there are some restricted functions in Jira/Confluence Cloud (Database, Arbitrary HTML, etc) to avoid XSS vulnerability and ensure data's security, so most data access and integration should be configured using Webhooks and REST API:

Compare Atlassian cloud vs server

Jira Cloud REST API & Confluence Cloud REST API

Jira WebHooks & Confluence Webhooks

Please, let us know what exactly you're trying to achieve so we can provide you with the correct source of information. :)

Hi Petter,

thanks for your answer!

First of all: I havent reached out to Atlassian yet.

The links you provided are nice to get a feeling for the interfaces Atlassian provides to develop connect-apps. Though im familiar with the core concepts of building my own apps and connecting them with the Atlassian cloud, I dont understand what happens behind the scenes.

Surely a understanding of Jira in the cloud is not particular necessary to build my own apps but its always nice to know to develop a deeper understanding how the whole platform works.

Now back to my question: In the third link I provided the Jira Nodes appear to me like black boxes. My question is targeting towards the architecture behind this black box.

Is it the same as the Jira server architecture? Or is it complety different?

How do you know which tenant has which app installed? Is this logic build into the Jira Node, into the TCS or into a totaly different service?

E.g.: There is an interesting video which provides some insights to the Tenant Config Service and Im asking for something similar for the Jira Compute Nodes and there connection to my apps :)

This is the community space, not necessarily where someone from Atlassian will see the question (though it is possible, they do sometimes answer questions).

You're better off actually contacting Atlassian directly.
