Jira Software Stuck on Database Setup Page

Hello, 

I have successfully installed Jira Software and created database as guided buy Atlassian. I also added the MySQL connector required.

For some reason, I seem to be getting stuck on the database setup page. It shows connectivity and 175 tables are created but I can't get past this page and it's been an hour. All I get is a spinning wheel and "Please wait while the database is set up. This may take a minute..."

I initially thought it was an error I made and uninstalled about 3 times. With fresh installs, still experiencing the same issue. It is frustrating, please help.

OS is CentOS 7
4TB Storage, 2GB RAM with 6GB Swap

MySQL Connector Version - Java-8.0.17
JIRA Software - 8.3.1

Looking at the problem it is obvious that there is an infrastructure issue here.

You are running JIRA using 2GB RAM, the minimum requirements are 6GB RAM or even higher depending on the users as per https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/server-hardware-requirements-guide-30736403.html

Please upgrade the infrastructure, make sure before you connect the database the JVM values are updated. xms = 1g and xmx = 3g

Hello @brbojorque ,

infrastructure had been upgraded since the initial post with additional 6GB RAM space added. Still, the same issue occur.

Deleted MariaDB and installed MySQL, now stuck on

'Database: We've found an error in MySQL supported version!

The database setup is not supporting utf8mb4'

I never imagined i'd need to put in this much work to get this running. It is still not running.

It is very easy to fix, just drop the database and create a new one using the link below.

Don't apologise @brbojorque I appreciate your kind assistance.

I have dropped the DB to see if anything changes and I seem to be seeing something that never showed before. 

Tables are being created as above but with progress bar on the startup screen moving with a message 'Loading Jira apps ...'

It never moved before, it always remained stuck for hours. I will update you with the progress made.

Hi @gf ,

So it looks like you need to have an updated MySQL Driver for 5.7 version and enable the utf8mb4 in mysqld configuration.

[mysqld]
...
character_set_server=utf8mb4

Or just use postgresql and make your life easier :)

Don't forget to create the database with the right collation based on the documentation.

I used PostgreSQL yesterday and it was all so easy till I started facing permission issues at setup. This then angered me enough to remove both Postgres & Maria with the consequence of me losing all my other DBs 

I'm making progress with MySQL now with the following you stated in link above;

Though I followed it before and didn't get anywhere, it is because they missed out a semicolon ';in the KB/guide.

However, I've had to let Jira do the auto setup to for it to work and then change licence. Exhausting!

I was told all these were partly due to hardware limitations but majorly, I feel it lies with limited compatibility issues.

Hi @gf , you are right, there a lot of complexities with setting up JIRA there quite few preparations you need to do and documentations to be read.

This is not to mention the maintenance of the systems and the overall health of the platform. 

If you are familiar with AWS then this quick start templates should probably help you with the infrastructure and setup.

My final solution has been to remove Jira Software 8.x and install 7.x which is much lighter on RAM and infrastructure.

It's been a journey. Many thanks once again.

Hi @gf , 

 

it might be a permissions issue on the database, can you have a look at the logs in JIRA_INSTALL_DIR/log/catalina.out and see if you have any errors related to the database ?

Hello @Alexis Robert many thanks for your response. I have had a look at the logs but I'm not tech savvy, I only know how to follow guidelines for now so the content doesn't make any sense to me.

Shall I attach the log on here for your perusal?

these log lines start with "INFO" as you can see, we need the ones starting with "ERROR" to get a more detailed view of what is going wrong.

Hello @Alexis Robert there are no lines starting with 'Error' in the catalina.out file

The only ones in there are the ones with error in between the lines similar to above.

Is there no facility for a screen share or remote assistance? I urgently need a fix on this matter.

All the other bits of the log say 'SEVERE' not 'ERROR' - Please see below;

Hi @gf , 

 

the issue is pretty clear: you don't have enough memory on your server, leading to these errors (GC Allocation Failure means the system can't allocate memory to Jira).

You need to increase the server memory from 2GB to 4GB and try again the installation.

Hi @gf , 

 

can you try changing the JVM memory parameters for Jira ? Stop Jira and follow these insctructions : 

  1. To increase heap space memory in Linux installations:
    In your <JIRA application installation directory>/bin open the setenv.sh file.
  2. Find the sections JVM_MINIMUM_MEMORY= and JVM_MAXIMUM_MEMORY=
  3. Change both values to 2048m

 Start Jira again and let me know if you still have issues

done as advised but still experiencing the same issue. :(  This is a terrible experience. I had so much hope in Jira as it looked refined. It has taken 7 days and I'm still unable to use the software with minor projects pending.

are you using the JRE binary bundled with your linux distribution or the one bundled with the Jira installer ? 

Atlassian only supports AdoptOpenJDK or Oracle JRE as mentioned here : https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver/supported-platforms-938846830.html

Hello,

I'm, using the one bundled with the installer.

Also i use MySQL with MariaDB. Could this be an issue? Though 175 tables are successfully written to DB.

Well MariaDB is not officially supported, and the logs you're showing do not point to a DB issue but you should still try to deploy Jira with the recommended versions if possible.

there's clearly an issue with available memory on this server as the error is very clear : the java process can't allocate memory to get Jira running.

You should definitely investigate more on this front.

Here is the proposal from Atlassian support. It' slightly different:

 

Based on the Database statistic, it seems that this is a medium size instance. Based on the GCViewer image as per attached in the screenshot GClog, it seems that the timespent for the GC is really high for on the 27th July 2012. We also notice that the heap usage was high during the day. Since the time taken for the GC full GC is high, this might be cause by the size of the heap that Full GC need to clear is very large.

Therefore, we would like to recommend to adjust the current JVM input parameter to the following. In Linux, please edit the <tt>JIRA_Install/bin/setenv.sh</tt>:

  • Use a parallel collector: <tt>-XX:+UseParallelOldGC</tt>. This will ensure that GC will perform the Garbage Collection more frequently. But, every collection should be small thus the lag time should be reduce.
  • Disable remote clients from triggering a full GC event <tt>-XX:+DisableExplicitGC</tt>
  • Set the Young space up to 30-40% of the overall heap. Eg: <tt>-XX:NewSize=1229m</tt>
  • optionally, reduce the size of the -Xmx to 3GB because as a benchmark we allocate 1 GB of heap to instance with 100,000 of issues. Reducing the -Xmx will reduce the amount of heap that GC need to clear for each Full GC.

Do let us know how it goes.

 

But the issue is, I don't know how to implement the solution.
