Label of Epic change but still old name in the label shown in the scrumboard

Sambath SUN July 8, 2022

Hello,

I changed the label of an Epic ( of all my epic to be honest :p) by adding [budget ID] in bracket as prefixe of the name (I will try to configurate a budget property later for my ticket view).

But in the scrumboard screen, the epic name on the ticket is still the old one. If I go in the detailed view of the ticket, same, Epic in the value list is still the old name.

If I click on the label Epic, it jump to the Epic view and this time, it has the real name with the [budget IT] in the label...

Do you know why ? Is there a sort of short name and long name in the ticket ?

Thanks for your help !

Epic names are a bit odd in Jira. There are sort of two:

  • The "Summary" field in an Epic is what sometimes shows.
  • The "Epic Name" field in an Epic shows at other times.

A best-practice that I always follow is to set them to the same thing all the time. Then there is no confusion when one field shows here, and the other field shows there.

Hope that helps.

Hi @Sambath SUN

Yes, and...to what Mykenna suggests:

For company-managed projects, the "Epic Name" field still exists and for team-managed projects only the "Summary" is used for epics.

My understanding is this is changing, as the "Epic Name" field is being sunset over time, and so only "Summary" will be used.

Kind regards,
Bill

Ok, but the summary is empty : I created the Epic in the Roadmap interface and I changed the name in the Roadmap too. So I never "touch" anything else thant the Summary.

Moreover, when I go in the detailed Epic screen, the summary is empty (since it is the first time I go in the details of the Epic). So, I did you method : I add my Epic Name in the Summary (in French interface it is "Description" so I hope we are talking about the same property...) but it still show different label in the name and in the Epic link :/

There is no way to access this Summary in the screens that exist by default ?

Thanks,

Sambath

Just to clarify the situation today for company-managed projects:

  • There are fields for Summary, Description, Epic Name, and many others
  • Summary and Epic Name are required fields when creating an issue of type Epic

If you are seeing something differently, please post an image as that may provide some context for what is happening.  Thanks!

Hello,

Thanks for your answer. I found the Summary property only when I click the button "CREATE" and then choose my ticket type = EPIC. But if I go in an existing EPIC ticket (created in the Roadmap interface), the "SUMMARY" property does not exist.

I don't find it either in the Project parameter > tickets > properties .

Do you know where I can add this "Summary" property when editing a ticket type=Epic ?

Thanks,

Sorry, but I have no idea where you mean for roadmaps.  My understanding is roadmaps currently displays the summary for company managed projects.  I just retested with my company-managed project and that is what I am seeing.

Hello,

I found it : the property is "Epic Name" in my interface. I found how to add it and then I saw the diffences !

RoadMap_new_Epic.PNG

In order to simplify for my collegues, I'm going to use an automation to automatically change the value with the Epic "name" (the one near the icon Epic) and hide the property "Epic Name"' :p

Thanks for your help !

Hum, last question on that topic :

-> What is the property name for the label in red ?(what I previously called wrongly "Epic Name" ? seems not to be Epic link, neithcer Epic name...I don"t find a property which I could use in a automation...

If change the red label then Epic Name = red label

For company-managed projects (CMP)

  • Issue type epics currently have a field called Epic Name (which is a text field)
  • Issue types of story/task/bug have a field called Epic Link (which is a link field), and was used to connect them, child to parent

Both Epic Name and Epic Link are deprecated and being removed.  For the link, everything is changing to use a "parent" field to link child issues to their parent.  As already noted, Summary will be used in place of Epic Name for epics.
