Hi everyone,
I am currently working with WIP limit in Kanban, which allows to limit the amount of tasks by status. It is possible to limit story points or days per status on Kanban board?
Best regards.
Patricio.
Hi Patricio,
I understand that you are using Jira Software Cloud with a Kanban board and are looking to restrict the WIP (work in progress) column restrictions to some other limitation other than the status of the issues.
This is not actually possible to do natively on a Kanban board. The WIP is specifically tailored to only allow you to restrict based on the status. The use of story points within a Kanban board is not really in line with Atlassian's vision of how Kanban agile framework should be implemented. You can read more about this in Kanban vs Scrum. But essentially Kanban is more concerned with metrics such as lead time, cycle time, and WIP, and less with the story points as a means to measure complexity or velocity as scrum tends to do.
Instead of trying to limit the number of issues by story points per column, I would suggest trying to move those issues to another different status as a means free up the column for issues, or expand the WIP limit to a higher value here.
I hope this helps.
Andy
And what about using Scrum Boards? I've implemented a scrum board but I'm not able to set WIP limits based on story points. Any suggestions?
Kind regards,
Marion
