Migrate from JIRA Server 6.3.15 to Cloud

Florian Feiler May 3, 2019

Hi,

I tried to export (via Import & Export > System Backup) my old system und uploaded the ZIP in the Cloud version via the import wizard, but it failed because my JIRA Server version is below 7. Any idea how I could manage the migration without having to update my Server version?

Thanks!

@Florian Feiler Since there are a lot of architectural and functional changes that have been introduced from JIRA Server v6.x to 7.x, and since JIRA Cloud is almost always the most updated one, it is not possible to migrate your data directly from JIRA Server v6.x to JIRA Cloud, sing System XML Export and Import.

Atlassian recommends to upgrade your JIRA Server version to a minimum 7.6.0 in order to successfully migrate to JIRA Cloud.

Please see this JIRA Server to Cloud migration guide for more details: https://confluence.atlassian.com/jirakb/migrate-from-jira-server-to-jira-cloud-779160826.html

Thanks! But would that require to pay for the server upgrade AND for the cloud at the same time? Sounds expensive.

@Florian Feiler If you still have a valid JIRA license, that has not expired, you can upgrade JIRA to a later version, without any expenses. But, if you need to take expert services from outside to perform this upgrade, then it may be expensive.

For migration from appropriate JIRA Server to Cloud, again, there are no expenses, except expert services from outside to perform this migration. The only expenses will be the JIRA Cloud subscription which you will have to pay for.

Hope it helps !

We are using JIRA 6.3.15 and the banner on top of every page tells me, that I have no access to product support and update services any longer. So I assume will have to pay for another 12 months to be able to upgrade to a higher version.

@Florian Feiler Yes, you will need to pay for another JIRA Server license so that your license maintenance period is still valid (not expired), in order to upgrade to a higher version (which has been released after the expiration date of your current license)
