Migration from Jira Cloud to to Cloud, User Data Merge or Overwrite?

Tom Shimali August 21, 2019

Currently we are preparing for a migration of a clients Jira data to the clients own Jira instance. In preparation for this we are planning to backup our Jira, cleanse all irrelevant data and hand over a cleansed backup to the client.

However, during the 'Restore Backup' phase in to the Test instance there is an option whether to Merge or Overwrite user data. Because this Test instance is ultimately linked to my companies Cloud account and will be Restore user data, I do not wish to affect any Users or data in our production instance - is the best option to Merge the user data and if so what affect may this have on our Cloud Production instance?

Thank you

Hi @Tom Shimali ,

Is there any data already present on your client's Jira instance? Or is it a fresh Jira Cloud instance with no pre existing data?

Hi @Deepanshu Natani

They will use Jira Cloud also, and there is no data. But we are currently testing using a Jira Cloud instance (also with no data, brand new) that is linked to my account I use for our Production Jira Cloud instance.

Since the target Jira instance does not have pre existing data, you do not need to "merge".

Please refer to the following link: https://confluence.atlassian.com/cloud/import-and-export-data-873871368.html

You can simply export data from your Jira Cloud instance (production), restore this data to a temporary Jira instance (test environment) [make sure that this test instance is an entirely new site of Jira cloud. If you are not sure about this, may be you can create another new test instance].

Now in the test environment, you can delete the irrelevant data. Then export data from your Jira test environment and import the data to your Client's Jira instance.

Hi @Deepanshu Natani

When I do this, and I get to the broken URL step where I select URLs to replace. If I select the URLs of an existing Production instance, will it affect the Production instance or only apply to the new Cloud trial instance?

Thanks

Tom,

Can you please share a screenshot displaying the issue? From your description, it is not clear where you are stuck.

Also explain the steps executed by you before you got stuck.

Hi Deepanshu,

I will need to import the data again to get a screenshot, which I will do today.

To try explaining, once I have imported just Data, I am asked whether I wish to replace any URLs with the Trial instance URL to avoid broken links. I have said 'No' to this as I'm not sure what impact it may have on any existing Production links elsewhere.

I am then importing Media but project data fails to load, either sits on the loading wheel or says no content found.

Thanks
