Migration of Jira Server to Data Center

Mahmoud Haggag February 28, 2023

We have currently the following server products:

1- Jira Core

2- Confluence

We are targeting to deploy the corresponding Data Center offering of each.

For Jira Core, we are thinking of Jira Software.

I'm seeking a step-by-step guide to accomplish this and a reference to Infrastructure sizing.

Hello @Mahmoud Haggag ! Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

To upgrade your Server versions of Jira and Confluence, basically, you just need to follow the steps from the below articles:

Note that, as mentioned in those articles, if you have any third-party plugin/app installed in Jira and Confluence, you will need to make sure those are compatible with Data Center versions, and also, that you have a data center license for those as well.

Also, note that if you are planning to move from Jira Core to Jira Software, you cannot use a "Jira Core" license, since those are different applications.

Regarding your question about sizing, we have some articles that you might want to look at. The one below is a good start:

Hope this helps! :)

Hi @Edson Araujo , I’ve already checked that link but there is no details or any guidance on how to move or export/import the data from infra to another infra. Please advise further..

Hi @Mahmoud Haggag !

Thanks for clarifying that! To move your applications to a new infrastructure, please check the following articles:

Hi @Edson Araujo .. That really helped me as a starting points. Now, I'm coming back with even more questions.

  1. The first url did not address cross DB compatibility. i.e., What if I'm migrating from oracle to PostgreSQL ?
  2. Atlassian Data Center migration plan - This url is talking about consolidating instances. Is it valid in my scenario?
  3. Migrating Confluence to Another Database - This url is stating some limitations (The XML export built into Confluence is not suited for the backup or migration of large data sets). Please advise.

Hi @Mahmoud Haggag ! Happy to help!

Let's try to address your questions:

  1. About migrating from Oracle to PostgreSQL, in that case you will need to take a look at the following article as well:
  2. Actually, that link discusses migrating from a single-node environment to a clustered environment, with more than one node for the same instance. If you are planning to have a single-node environment when migrating to Data Center, you can skip it. ;)
  3. Correct! Depending on the size of your dataset, you might need to work with a DBA to migrate the data from one database to another. In case you are migrating from one database type to another as mentioned above, you might need a third-party application to migrate the data.
