Need Project, Epic, Feature, Story Hierarchy

Jane Deese February 10, 2023

Is there a way to create the hierarchy above in Jira? I need to have an overall Project at the top, then Epics, Features under Epics and then Stories under Features. I am seeing conflicting opinions and advice in the community forum and some responses are so old, I am not sure what applies or not. Thanks in advance!

Hi @Jane Deese

We use Structure by Tempo to implement our extended hierarchy. We've found it to be a little more flexible than Advanced Roadmaps in our context. There's some detail on how we did it here.

The default Jira hierarchy is Epics -> Stories -> Sub-tasks.  Here's an article about renaming the Epic level to Feature level if you're following the SAFe approach.

Hi @Jane Deese,

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

The short answer is no, you cannot change the default hierarchy which is Epic - Standard issue types - Sub-tasks. What you can do if you have Jira Premium is to add additional hierarchy above Epic, see Configure custom hierarchy levels in Advanced Roadmaps for more information.
