Hallo, I am an Admin and we make use of Company managed projects, Jira cloud.

Within a specific workflow, we are preventing that a story gets closed, while it still contains sub-tasks that are open/in progress/etc.

The workflow in question has a 'Condition' assigend to it that "All sub-tasks must have one of the following statuses to allow parent issue transitions: Resolved Closed or Done"

Looking at the workflow diagram, this is located at the transition to the status Resolved, Closed (green statusses)

Up until recently this was all working fine: sub-tasks needed to be completed before the main story could be closed. Yet now, for some reason, it has stopped working (while the workflow was not edited recentely)

I have re-checked the workflow's conditions, and followed the steps described here:

https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-questions/Preventing-issues-from-being-closed-while-the-sub-tasks-are/qaq-p/1452578

But am unable to find what has changed, or what the reason could be that it is no longer working.

Any other tips on what I should be checking would be much appreciated.

Hi @Annelise Du Piesanie

All your statuses have 'Allow all statuses to transition to this one' set up, is there any condition / validation on the one going to Resolved that would stop the user from using that transition rather than the expected 'Resolve Issue' workflow?

Hi @Annelise Du Piesanie ,

Welcome to the community!
If you are sure that the workflow has not changed, this should indeed not happen.

Let's seeif we can figure out what happened:

  • Can you recreate this?
Check if you can effectively close an issue with open subtasks linked to it now. If you can, please do check all transitions for the flow and make sure that the validator is on all of them.
  • If you can't recreate it but you see that it happened on other issues, check the issue history
    • Who did the specific transition? Which transition was it? When was the transition made?
    • Did the issue move from another project / issuetype? Were the conditions of the workflow active when the transition happened (maybe in another project or issuetype the conditions aren't on the workflow)
    • Were the subtasks created after the transition happenend? check the created date

Let us know what you find out so we can help check!

- Tessa

Thank you for the quick reply Tessa - I am able to re-create this as well. So am going to again re-check all the transistions for the workflow first

Hmm, then I indeed would think one of your transitions does not have the validator.  As @Stephen.Lugton  mentions, be sure to check your global transitions as well.
