Customizing boards columns in work management - more than one status in one column?

Using Jira Software Management I was able to collect several status from my workflow in one column. This seems to be issing in Jira Work Managment?

Is it that one status always equals one column?

you are correct, in Work Management Projects, each status will have its own column.
