Recommendations on how best to size and configure Atlassian Software on Virtual Server(s).

I am looking for recommendations on how best to size my Atlassian software.  We currently are licensed for approximately 250 users per software on each of these: 1) JIRA Software, 2) Crowd, 3) Confluence, 4) Crucible, 5) Fisheye, 6) BitBucket.  I am new to the administrative role and would like direction on how best to size, install, and configure.  Looking for advice on which ones to install on the same server and which ones to install on separate servers.  We have potential to grow form the 250 to 1,000 or more, but I don't believe my management is interested in the Data Center version.  I will need to present charts to my management for Sandbox / Development / Production environment showing how many servers and how big.  More than likely they will be virtual servers.

Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Check out these sizing guides from Atlassian's documentation:

• JIRA
• Confluence
• Crowd - doesn't require a lot of resources and happily runs on an instance at the "smallest" JIRA size
• Crucible (see Hardware Requirements section)
• Fisheye (see Hardware Requirements section)
• Bitbucket Server

Those are all the official Atlassian recommendations. You also might be interested in seeing some results from a survey Atlassian conducted about its customers' sizing of Confluence.

Since you're working in a virtualized environment, I'd suggest having a separate host for each application. If you're meeting the system requirements for each application, there's not really any penalty for properly sandboxing them on separate VMs. This gives you the additional flexibility of only having to take one application down at a time if you need to resize the boxes in the future as well. The biggest thing to be aware of while using VMs is the disk I/O speed. The guides above speak on this and recommend some values to try and get to in terms of read/writes per second to make sure the applications are running happily.

Hey Daniel,

Thank you for the quick response!  I will review the documentation and  appreciate the guidance on the servers.  I will present that idea of each application on it's on VM so as not to interrupt one app with another for downtime or upgrades, etc.
