Seeking Advice on Using Jira Dashboard

Kamila Jekal July 11, 2024

Hi Atlassian Community,

I hope you're all doing well. I'm looking for some advice and best practices on how to effectively use Jira Dashboards to report sprint progress to non-technical stakeholders.

Currently, I manage sprint progress using an Excel sheet that tracks goals and progress percentages. While this method works, it can be quite manual and time-consuming. I'm exploring the possibility of leveraging Jira Dashboards to make this process more efficient and visually appealing.

Specifically, I would love to know:

  1. What key metrics and information should I include on a Jira Dashboard to make sprint progress clear and understandable for non-technical stakeholders?
  2. Are there any recommended apps or built-in Jira tools that provide useful graphs and visualizations for reporting?
  3. Any tips on configuring Jira Dashboards to highlight goal achievement and progress percentages?

My main goal is to create a dashboard that provides a clear snapshot of our progress toward sprint goals without overwhelming stakeholders with technical details.

I would greatly appreciate any insights, recommendations, or examples of how others have successfully set up their Jira Dashboards for similar purposes.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi @Kamila Jekal,

Our Great Gadgets app provides all the gadgets you need to build your dashboard to track your sprints easily and efficiently. From sprint burndown/burnup, sprint velocity to pivot tables and formula gadgets that let you track anything you want. These gadgets and eventually some native gadgets of Jira (like Sprint Health) will be more than enough.

Have a look over these articles for more details:

Also, make use of the Pivot Table & Pivot Chart gadget, which is very powerful. With this gadget you can create all kind of tables and charts showing, for example, sum of story points or percentage of completion per assignee. Is like the pivot table from Excel.

Hi @Kamila Jekal, I'd be happy to share some suggestions for effectively using Jira Dashboards:

Q1: What key metrics and information should I include on a Jira Dashboard to make sprint progress clear?

  1. Sprint Burndown/Burnup Chart: Shows work completed over time.
  2. Sprint Goal Completion: Progress bars or checkmarks for goals.
  3. Velocity Chart: Displays team performance over multiple sprints.

Q2: Are there any recommended apps or built-in Jira tools that provide useful graphs and visualizations for reporting?

  1. Built-in Jira Gadgets:

    • Sprint Health Gadget
    • Sprint Burndown Gadget
    • Issue Statistics Gadget
  2. Recommended App:

    • TeamBoard TimePlanner: Provides advanced reporting and a customizable dashboard for tracking team workload and resource allocation, offering flexibility to customize Jira components. (Screenshot below)

@Kamila Jekal You have a bunch of gadgets available to display almost "any" information of your projects on a dashboard.

Then you have 2 dimensional filters to display based on a filter 2 variables on a table.
