We setup a board with column "in-progress", and set a maximum column length of 4. We don't want more than 4 stories at a time. But we notice that when we move a task to in-progress it also includes it in the calculation. Anyway to limit the length to specific type?
Well done! Next-gen boards are different, yup, but you've solved it correctly!
Just to keep in mind, boards can be created and stored in your user profile, with no need for showing them in the project's sidebar.
Besides, it is possible to create a kanban/scrum board populated by project(s) of any types.

Thanks Ignacio. The reason we kept it to a board, is because this is a support group, they are interested in the issues as they appear on a daily basis. There is really no concept of agile sprint, a retrospective. It's get together, huddle and gather around the board to discuss the latest issues and tackle them as a group.
I wish Jira would allow us to promote a task to a story, but for now we are going to discuss putting everything as stories The concept of task/story is a bit of a mystery right now. I understand story/subtask, but don't get the task.

The only way I can think of would be having one board just for stories and a different one for tasks.
Board's filters would need to be modified in order to filter by issue type accordingly.
Hope it helps.

How can you create 2 boards?
Don't tell me because we are running the nextgen schedule we can't do that. I was told that we better go to nextgen, since Atlassian is moving towards that.

I don't think this idea will work us, we are using next-gen. I am starting to regret it every day picking next-gen, since we can't have multiple boards.
For now what we have done is change the epics to own stories and stories to own subtasks. That way we can track the number of stories and set a max on the number of stories.
