Subtasks in Jira Standard

Mu August 19, 2024

Hi

We have JIRA standard and can't seem to see child/subtasks in the Board and Backlog views.

Is thus down to having a Stamdard licence and not Premium licence?

Thanks

Michael

Hi

So we still have an issue on the BOARD view - the subtasks are still not showing and had a look at the filters . Problem is our guru is off until next week. I've tried to create a new filter as below. I'm trying to create a filter and it's not having it - can you tell me where it's going wrong?

HI @Mu

The project that you have created is a team-managed project. Sadly, they do not have the option for the sub-tasks. The open request is here: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JSWCLOUD-18064

As an alternative, a company-managed project would have to be created, but for this, you would need to have Administer Jira global permission. If so, can you create a project? Since you already have some data in your team managed project and to be able to see the sub-tasks, you would have to create a new company project, and then move all of the issues from team to company managed project.

Thanks Nikola,

I don't have that access level, and the person who does is only back from Annual Leave until 27/08

I have counted 19 subtasks that are not presenting.

I suppose I could re-create these as singular tickets (no child tickets) and then create dependcies between these and the current parent tickets?

Thanks

Hello @Mu

By default, sub-tasks won't be appearing in the Backlog because they are not to be considered to be sprint items. For not showing in the active sprints, you can check the board filter and to see if there is something that is hiding sub-tasks from showing. Also, check your swimlanes and set them to be stories. This of course refer to the company-managed projects.

Hi @Mu,

You can definitely use sub-tasks in standard Jira!

To create one from the backlog:

  1. Click the parent issue (like a Story).
  2. Click "Add"
  3. Choose "Create sub-task"

Hope this helps!

Thanks Sean

I can't see what I'm doing wrong here.

We do have subtasks but they just aren't appearing in the Backlog or Active Sprint Board.

Any other ideas anyone?

Hi @Mu

Sub-tasks don't automatically show on the backlog. They usually live within their parent issues.

However, to see them on your board (Active Sprint), you may need to adjust your board's configuration. It's possible a filter or swimlane setting is unintentionally hiding them. Double-check those settings to make sure sub-tasks are included.

Hope this helps!
