The Description section shows the Text and Visual editors. When I highlight a character and choose "Superscript", it works, but upon saving it reverts to the visible carets. All other markup seems to work. Any thoughts on how to fix this? Is it a bug? I should mention that the text I'm trying to superscript is within bold text, in case that matters.

Is there any space before the superscript characters? Sound like you might be running into this: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRASERVER-42310
Yup! That was it, though I had to put a space AFTER the superscript as well as before to get it to work. Weird. Thank you, @Tzu Hau Chai! Problem solved.

Many of us are looking forward to a similar function to format text as superscript or subscript in Trello.
There is another card specifically for Trello on the topic of allowing formatting to superscript or subscript in Trell.
