I would like to search for and surface the actual comment in an epic - not the epic itself. The idea is to simply use a keyword "status" in the comment field to be able to report the current status of an EPIC (status here does NOT mean Done, ToDo, InProgress)
Hi @Brian Horton and welcome!
You can search for certain words and you can see a discussion about that here. Relying on words in a free text field is not very reliable - people misspell or use other words than we expect them, etc.
I would recommend that you create a Custom Field for this purpose and have people update it. That way you can much more reliably search for and represent the data in charts, dashboards, etc. You can always add more values to this single select field (or have it of some other type if that fits your use case better).
You can create a loop transition (goes back to the same status) with a transition screen that has this Custom Field on it. Maybe call that transition "Update Epic Info" or something like that.

Thanks for responding, Kristjan!
I ended up creating a custom field and creating/saving a public JQL filter to surface the comments in the field with an "is not empty".
Can you elaborate on what you mean by creating a loop transition?

Very welcome, @Brian Horton
The "Status Update" transition is an example of a loop transition:
It originates in the status "In Progress" and goes back to the same status, "In Progress". These loop transitions are great for automating updates to fields or info gathering without transition the ticket to another workflow status.
If this answer is helping you, could you please accept the answer?
Thanks so much,
