Syncing parent and linked issues

Monica Vijaywargi March 2, 2022

Hi Community,

I am trying to automate the task of syncing parent and linked issues when priority of parent changes then the linked task priority should also be updated and vice-a-versa.

The steps that I am following are : Field value changed -> creating a branch for linked issue -> then edit fields and copy from trigger issue.

It doesn't seem to work. When I change the priority of parent task the rule status is "No action performed". Can you help?

Thank you

Hello @Monica Vijaywargi

Welcome to the community.

When you say you are updating a "parent" issue and want the "linked" issues to also be updated, you are mixing terminology.

Jira has a generic issue linking feature. Jira also has two native parent/child relationships that happen outside of the generic issue linking. Those parent/child relationships are between Epics and the child issues of the Epic, and between issues and the child subtasks of the issue.

Are you trying to update genericly linked issues, or are you trying to update the children in one of the above parent/child relationships? If the latter, which one?

Hi,

I have a project "A" that has a rule, and the rule gets triggered when the the status of this issue ("A") is changed. When the status changes two new projects ("B" and "C") get linked to this parent project. How Jira displays it is under project "A" -> linked issues relates to project "B" and "C".  Since it says linked issues I assumed that these are linked issues.

So what I want to achieve is after the new projects are created if the priority, Due date, etc. of project "A" changes then the same update should happen in project "B" and "C".

Thank you

Hello Monica,

That describes the generically linked issues.

Is you rule set up under just one project, or was it created as a Global Automation?

To be able to affect issues in multiple projects, which you are trying to do, you will need to set up the rule as a Global Automation and then specify all the projects you want to affect in the Scope on the Rule Details page.

You will also have to enhance your rule so that the trigger applies to only the project you want, by adding a condition after the trigger.

@Trudy Claspill  is it possible to update the date value change from an issue to it's parent epics related issues?. Condition here is the parent epic and it's related issue are in different projects.

Say epic E on projectA linked to issues IS in project B. If any of the issue under E gets updated , it has to update the attribute in IS?

Hello @Shamla TK

Yes, if the Actor the rule runs as has permission to edit the issues in the other project, then you can make updates to issues in different projects in an Automation rule.
