After a recent change subtasks are now appearing in a table view with options to add/remove columns. This is fine when viewing an issue in a view that occupies the entire page.
However when viewing the backlog and selecting different issues, I have the selected issue appearing in a right side content pane. I used to be able to view that issue and its underlying subtasks easily, however these subtasks are now showing as a squashed table with scroll bars trying to occupy a narrow space that is not suitable for a table. The title of each subtask is being broken across multiple lines and this is creating a very tall table of subtasks.
Even after removing excess columns the table is not optimising for the available space and I need to use the horizontal scroll bar just to read each subtask. Even the column selector is taking up an entire column space adding to the scroll.
I think that subtasks should display more like Linked Issues, at least when in this side bar viewing mode. Is there a way to switch it back so I can read sub tasks again without having to open each issue into its own page?
I understand that the backlog view of some work items can leave the subtask list more difficult to use effectively. I created a support case on your behalf over in https://getsupport.atlassian.com/servicedesk/customer/portal/48/PCS-402378
I would recommend following up with our support team to see if we can investigate this further.

Hi @Callum Davey , welcome to the Atlassian Community and thanks for your post.
Please can you provide a screen of what you are seeing?
I would then tag the Atlassian support into this to get someone on the product to look at your suggestion to see if anything can be done about the webpage formatting / how the table is being treated.
Cheers

Thanks for reaching out.
The subtask table in the side bar does not interact effectively with the side bar width/ resizing. for instance:
Compare this to Linked Issues in the side bar view where
This is not possible with subtasks in the side bar.
So for me I cannot use the Backlog / side bar view to view subtasks for each item when doing sprint planning etc... Im having to open each item in its own window to view and interact with sub tasks, which for me renders the side bar useless.

Another issue with this is when you resize the Subtask Table columns in a full page issue view (e.g. when you've opened the selected issue so it occupies the entire window) and then you go back to the Backlog - side bar view, the subtask table column sizing you set in the full page view is still applied in the side bar view resulting in huge horizonal scroll bars.

I have exactly the same issue. Subtasks became unusable after this update. How could this make it into production? Atlassian QA nonexistent..

I totally agree, I want to bring back the old look of the subtasks, which was much more convenient than this. We don't use subtasks at all right now.

Hi @Callum Davey , sorry for the delay in replying and thanks for your comprehensive feedback. I've tagged the Atlassian Support into this post so hopefully they can get this information to the product team and get you some answers
Best wishes
