The "Time Estimate" field resets to "None" after being set

Robbie Sykes (OLD) April 3, 2018

Most of our projects do not leverage the Time Tracking feature. We have a new project that does though. I've gone through every step I can find to enable Time Tracking in the project, and everything seems to work fine, except for one problem:

Every time I enter a value for "Time Estimate", the entry is accepted, and then a moment later refreshes to "None".

System configuration details:

  1. At the System level, Time Tracking is enabled.
  2. The users testing this have the Work On Issue permission, and are able to log time to the specific issue. We just can't get the Time Estimate field to set.
  3. I've enabled the Time Tracking fields in the Field Configurations & Field Configuration Scheme. This Field Configuration Scheme is assigned to the project.
  4. I've enabled the Time Tracking fields in the Screens, Screen Schemes, and Issue Type Screen Scheme. That Issue Type Screen Scheme has been assigned to the project.
  5. The changes I try to submit to the Time Estimate field are not shown in the Issue's History. It's like the change never occurred.

Is there an additional step I am missing? Again, all of the Time Tracking features seem to work perfect except being able to populate the "Time Estimate" field.

Thanks!

I was having the same issue of estimated time disappearing.

This is what I did as a work around worked for me.

If you simply Click on the issue, enter time in Time Estimate, it will disappear after a couple of second.

But, you need to do the following:

1. Click on the issue of interest

2. Click the Issue number to the top left (Ex: RT-123), this will open up a NEW TAB in Chrome with the Issue Details (Not a pop of the issue in the existing tab).

3. Then Click Edit to the top left, this will pop up an edit window in the same tab with the Title - Edit Issue: RT 123/issue #

4. Scroll down, find the Original Estimate field, Enter time estimate in W, D, H, M

5. Click Update at the bottom of the screen to save the data

Now the data will be saved. You exit the tab, go back to the Active Sprint, Click on the Issue RT-123 and you will see that the Time Estimate shows what you entered. And this will stick.

Hope this helps. This is indeed a bug and Jira needs to fix this.

This issue is related to a global setting called "Jira legacy mode".  You need this turned off in order for the Original Estimate field to change on the card screen in the board.

Change this by going (as Admin) to:

1. Jira Settings on the left-hand menu

2. Issues on the left-hand menu

3. Time Tracking on the left-hand menu

4. In the Time Tracking screen, click Edit Global Settings which is a button at the bottom of the screen.

5. On the Edit Global Settings screen, go to the last option which is Jira Legacy Mode and toggle this setting to "off".

6. Now check to see if you can edit the original estimate field, it certainly worked for us.

Have the same issue:

- estimation world from the edit issue (but it's a long way for the each issue on the board

- doesn't work as for the issue when it's clicked on the board and when the new Jira view is used for the issue

Any one has ideas how to solve it for the board and the new view without opening Edit issue view?

+1 I'm also having this issue.

I created a Kanban board and enabled time tracking through configurations.

I can add a time estimate when I create the task, but if I try and change the Time estimate later, the value becomes 'none'

Please help.

+1 Same thing :((

I solved this by getting 'User' Access, I had every other level of access except this one, thought it wasn't important but turns out it is, hope this helps

Robbie Sykes (OLD) April 25, 2018

Can you clarify what you mean by 'User' Access? I added myself to the Users group for that project (was in admin role before).  That didn't change anything.

Try this actually.

I'm assuming you're clicking on a card in the Kanban board, then on the right you're clicking 'show more', then under time tracking you're trying to enter a value, and then once you have, the time turns to 'none'.

This happened to me and what you have to do is:

1. turn on time tracking for that board

2. click on a card in your Kanban board

3. in the card, you need to click the card code in the top left, the one on the right of the / symbol

eg if it says

Develop website / WEB-4

you would click on the 'WEB-4'

4. from here you'll enter the card details view, and you need to click 'edit' in the top left

5. this will bring up a card with more details, and from here, scroll down to 'Original Estimate' and type in your time there.

hope that helps, let me know if you need details on how to enable time tracking.

Robbie Sykes (OLD) April 25, 2018

Interesting. When I open the ticket into the Edit view, there is a Time Tracking field, but there is no Original Estimate field. The Original Estimate field IS there when viewing it in the sidebar while in board or backlog view. When I try to add Original Estimate to the list of fields on the Screen, it is not available. ("Time Tracking" is available and has been on the screen though.)

Lien April 25, 2018

Have you tried

1. Adding a new task

2. clicking 'Configure fields'

3. 'where is my field' (if time tracking isnt there for you to tick)

4. type in 'Time tracking'

5. Click on the link under 'Field Screen'

6. scroll down to the bottom and add 'time tracking'

This is the set up i have to go through everytime i set up a new project/board
