Unable to access board settings to create swim lanes

GKO September 18, 2018

I'm attempting to create a swim lane on a Jira Software kanban board.  However the only option in the Board > ... menu  is "manage rules" and no other option.  From what I've read, I need to access board settings to create swim lanes.  What am I missing here?

I am admin for the project and we do use sprints on the board page.

Ahh!  I see the swim lanes in the Kanban (classic) template and not in the Kanban "featured" template which we created as we were new to Jira.  Thank you for everyone's answers.  Now not sure how to change our current project to classic, but since it's early, we can probably start over.

@GKO

You can use swimlanes in scrum and kanban boards. I'd recommend creating a project from a software template.

I am using a software template project using a kanban board, but the option for board settings (and thus swim lanes) is not present.

Also, I'm not referring to status columns as swimlanes.  I'm referring to horizontal lanes

@GKO,

Can you double check in your project detilas that it is not an agility project? Also, are you a board administrator for the kanban board?

"manage rules" only appears in agility boards that are made from agility projects.

Thanks Mary.  I couldn't find any indication on the project details page that indicated this, so I just created some projects from scratch to see the differences. I couldn't even find that these featured templates are referred to as "agility" projects.  Honestly these terminologies are very confusing.

Unfortunately they renamed the “Agility “ template to Software template which causes further confusion.

@GKO, you are using an “Agility” project that does not allow you to change any board settings. You can try to change the project by going to project > project settings and look for details and see if you can change the type. However you may not be able to do this in which case you will need to start with creating a new project and change the template type.

Thanks!  Which project can use swim lanes if agility ones cannot?  Is there any template that provides both the scrum/kanban boards that also use swimlanes?

You should create a board from the boards menu and you will be able to use swimlanes.

@GKO, as mentioned you may not be able to change. Agility has been in beta for awhile and there was, if I recall correctly, a point where you could change it but then later updates removed the ability. Agility is quite different and if the option to change is not in the details under settings then you cannot. You will just need to create a new project. Now you may (?) be able to Move the issue to the new project. I have not tried this. Go to view all issues for Agility project and see if you can perform a move.
