Currently on a (paid) Standard Jira plan (update: annual paid), previously using a Free Confluence + Free JIra on another temporary account.
Q: However, now I am unable to retain the Confluence free-plan. Can only use a 30-day trial with Confluence, after which I am billed ;-(
Is there no way to use a free plan product next to a standard paid product?
Answer: " Please note: We only offer Cloud Free products as monthly subscriptions. To add a Cloud Free product to an existing paid annual subscription, the subscription must be moved to monthly billing.". Source : https://www.atlassian.com/licensing/cloud#cloud-free (the info was already there #oops)
So the issue was the annual paid subscription
I have not attempted mixing free with paid personally.
can you try going to your site from admin.atlassian.com and selecting "manage subscriptions" from the left hand sidebar? From there you should be able to change your plan per product.

Correct, there are two options "Standard" (currently on Standard, 30 day free plan) and "Premium". Since there are <10 users installed would expect a "Free Plan" option as well..

Given you now have standard Jira the you have Support and can ask them directly. Based on your experience it may be that you cannot achieve your goal. Of course you can use Confluence standard and control the number of users independently, <= 10 should be free.
