Update all value option in Custom Field - Target Quarter

Hy December 16, 2019

Dear Supporter,

The custom field has been created with the following option list.

Target Quarter field - YYYYQQ (Ex: None, 2019Q4, 2020Q1, 2020Q2, 2020Q3, 2020Q4) there were existing 800 issues.

New request to change:

Item a/ Remove - None value listing for easy sorting.

Item b/ Target Quarter field - YYYY-QQ (Ex: 2019-Q4, 2020-Q1, 2020-Q2, 2020-Q3, 2020-Q4)

Question:

1/ How do I remove None value in item a?  There was some None value in this field among 800 issues.

2/ If I update the new option list as item b, how do I update existing 800 issues already has value Target Quarter without a hyphen YYYYQQ.

Before making these changes, to remove a None value and make this Target Quarter field as a mandatory field.  Both projects AK and AKREQ are currently using this Target Quarter field.

Thanks for you suggestion.

Hy

Hi Hy - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

To remove the None value, you need need to make the field Required.

If you want to change the value, go ahead and add the new value first, then do a bulk change from the existing value to the new value. Then go back and delete the old value.

I hope that helps!

Thanks John for your replied.

The field required doesn't get rid of None value.  Every custom field with option value always created with None value on the list.  There is no option to remove / delete this None value.  It's annoyed.

When doing the bulk changes, be careful to filter a specifically value.  Then, change each value option at a time.  Otherwise, all bulk changes will be changed to the same value.

Ex: 1st bulk changes from 2020Q1 to 2020-Q1

2nd bulk changes from 2020Q2 to 2020-Q2

etc ...

Just wondering if there is a better or faster way of making a bulk change?

No, that's the quickest way on the Bulk Change.

If the field is required, it shouldn't allow you to save with None. The other option is to also have a Default value for the field.

Thanks John.  agreed, it's the only way to make if as a required field not to display a None value.

Did this take care of all of your needs?

Hy December 17, 2019

Indeed thank John for your help.

Without setting a required custom field, none value cannot be removed!  It is a Jira limitation!

Questions of value option changes from YYYYQQ to YYYY-QQ in the Target Quarter field.

1/ Does it affect users filters?

2/ Does it mess up their format?

Yes, I agree on the limitation.  :-)

1. It will affect filters if they use the old value. Those would need to be updated to use the new values.

2. It should not mess up their format.
