Visualize bug related to an issue on the bord

René Boshuizen January 5, 2022

Dear community,

With our team we setup a Jira board with several issues representing sub-projects within our project (API implementation per application). Each issue (application) has +/- 15 underlying issues with steps (actions) per implementation.

When a bug occurs we like to add the issue which is visible on the main bord as a sub issue, related to the Project. For example, we like to see at a glance on the main board that subproject X is still in lane “Analyse” because sub issue “Bug A” is still open.

We tried to add and link the bug as main and underlying issues but not able to get it visible on the main bord similar like a sub issue on a user story.

Thanks in advance,

 René

Hello @René Boshuizen

Thank you for reaching out.

Per your description, I understand that you need your linked bugs to appear as a card below their stories on the board, just like you can do with Story and sub-tasks (As displayed in the screenshot below). Have I understood it properly?

If that's what you need, I'm afraid you can not do that using the default board of Jira software, as the swimlanes can not be configured based on linked issues. To achieve something similar, you can try one of the following approaches:

1 - You can properly display linked issues in the card layout of your board (configure it under board settings > Card layout). They will appear on both the Active Sprint and backlog views, however, they will not display its current status or any other details of the linked issues unless you click on the "parent issue" and open the issue detail view, as you can see in the screenshot below:

OR

2 - You can configure your bugs as "Sub-tasks" of your Stories. To do this, you can create a new type of sub-task (called Bug) to distinguish it from other sub-tasks and bulk update your bug issues to the new type.

You can check the documentation below to know how you can create a new sub-task type and bulk update your bugs with the new type:

Create a sub-task issue type

Edit multiple issues at the same time

Let us know if I have properly understood your requirement.

Hello Petter,

Thanks for your clear explanation. You understood properly, that is exactly what we were trying to achieve. I will try both options and keep you posted on the results.

Thanks again

Hello Peter,

Setup was already configured according to 2nd option and does not provide the requested layout. Filtering on the bugs was already possible.

Option 1 would probably be the best solution. Unfortunately the project was created as Team managed i.s.o. Company managed, card layout is not visible. Is there another way to configure card layout in Team managed modus. Else I am afraid I have to sent a request for a new project in company mode to the admin, move the stories to this project and configure the card layout.

Thanks in advance,

René

Hello @René Boshuizen

Indeed, team-managed projects are simplified projects, so it does not have the option to edit field layouts, although we have the following feature request to consider this possibility in the future:

Ability to customize the fields shown on cards in team-managed projects (backlog + board)

Feel free to vote and watch the suggestion to increase its priority and also receive notifications about any updates.

For now, I believe the best option for you would be to move your issues to a Company-managed project indeed.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help with.

Hi Petter,

Agree, converting the stories does not require a lot of effort.

Coverting sub-tasks would require considerable more work (with our configuration).

I will vote for future projects :)

Thanks for all the support !!!

Regards,

René

Hey René,

I'm glad to know I was able to help!

Have a nice day and feel free to contact us again every time you need.

Hi Petter,

Maybe you can help me with a related issue.

I set up an entire new board were the sub-projects are epics now, every task (+/- 15) are stories and we like to add issues as sub-tasks.

Works really well, only when we add a bug (sub-task) layout will move the story to top of the board covering all three lanes (to do, in progress and Done like a merge of cells in Excell) and within we can move the subtask(s) to the different lanes.

Is it possible when we enter an issue (subtask)) the story will remain for example in the lane " In progress" and sub-tasks are visible as underlying cards on the board?

Thanks in advance,

René

Hello René,

I'm not sure if I completely understood your request, but it seems you are looking for a way to display your Stories as an entire line on your board view, separating its sub-tasks by column (To do, In progress, etc) right below the related Story. Is that correct?

If that's what you are looking for, you can configure a swimlane in your company-managed board to achieve your goal. These would be the steps:

  1. Navigate to your board > Board settings > Swimlanes
  2. Select your swimlanes to be based on "Stories", as in the screenshot below:

  3. This is how your active board will be displayed:

Let us know if this is the feature you are looking for.

Hello Petter,

Thanks, exactly were I was looking for.

Somehow it is not possible for us to configure the lane on story's, but we are able to configure the lane on Epics which has an collaterale advantage in our project.

Because of the multiple sub-projects, now we have a clear overview without filtering.

Thank you very much (again),

René
