Are you looking for ScriptRunner for Cloud or for Data Center? For the cloud, the funcionality is not the same like it is for the Data Center. In my opinion DC has more options since it is powered by Groovy programming language. That language is based on Java language. So basics of Java should be helpful.

What Nikola said, and also play with the tool by getting a free instance of Jira to experiment with. Once you have a working script for something, post it in this community and someone will always comment on it :)
