Not really, just another nice-to-have that's not high on the list of things to implement in software that's not intended to be a spreadsheet.
Sorry, I'm quite cynical about the way you have phrased this question. I do think it would be very very useful (let alone just "convenient" - it absolutely would be that) to be able to get a grid view of a pile of issues and be able to directly update the fields within them.
Putting my Atlassian-fanboy and pragmatic hats back on, there are a couple of things I want to mention:
- Jira was never intended to be a spreadsheet (although it's a good replacement for spreadsheets that people have been pretending are useful for issue tracking or project management)
- It's not as simple as "pile of cells, edit at will" - if I can see an issue, it does not necessarily mean I can edit it. Or transition it. Or reassign it. Or change the reporter. Or change its position in the queues or backlogs, or, or, or. Humans get annoyed when you give them a grid of stuff, say "go ahead and change stuff... but, oh, not that bit... or that one... or that..."
- Atlassian have this open as a new feature, and have done for a while. To their credit, they have not closed it, it's something they do look to do, and as they change the UI, it's something they do look at, and it does have an influence. Whilst the issue navigator itself has remained quite intransigent on the subject, it's clear other areas have not - I remember (and am still working with) Jira systems that have no way to change data on an issue other than "click edit".
- The short one - Apps. There are a number that present spreadsheet views and allow direct edit. I'm not placed to recommend anything, I'm a very light user (and taking the fanboy hat off, would vastly prefer the issue navigator to do it natively), but they are well worth a look.
