Why can't I set (or reset) the logo or favicon in Jira?

I upgraded our Jira server from 7.5.0 to 8.1.0 and manually copied the attachments, avatars and logos folders across from the old volume to the new volume (within a docker).

The attachments and avatars work fine but the logo and favicon do not. 

I have tried to upload a new logo or favicon but both fail and the error screen provides no information.

I read online that others have had the same issue and managed to fix this by resetting to the default but there is no button or link to reset so I'm not sure how to even reset these and am completely stuck so any help would be appreciated.

Hi Stefan,

Resetting the favicon or Logo should have a link next to the uploaded icon if one has been uploaded like this:

If the reset option is not showing up it is indicating that the default image is currently in use.

But the behavior you are encountering usually ties back to a filesystem permission error where the Jira application user does not have the appropriate access to the files or directory in use.

I would recommend starting at the permissions first and make sure they are set correctly and then restart the application after resetting the permissions on the directories.

For a Linux OS, Additional details can be seen in "How to fix JIRA Directories permission in Linux",  and for Windows you need to grant read & write access to the home and install directories for the user that the Jira service runs as. Check the Jira Service to see which user that is.

Also if this is a test instance on a Windows 10 OS, there was a recent feature that went out on win10 that makes all new files read only to services check out this Microsoft Answer on the topic if you're running a test instance on windows 10.

If it is not permissions related check the logging for additional errors that can help narrow this down, and let me know what you find.

Thanks, it was a permissions issue. 

After seeing your response I updated the permissions to the /data folder and can now set the logo and icon successfully.

Hi, I checked the user and it's Network Service. This user has the necessary permissions, yet the logos and favicon are not used. Do you have any idea why?

Controlled folder access is turned off (the one referenced in the Microsoft discussion)
