Why do I see the error 'user xyz doesn't exist' while importing user stories in JIRA

Madhurima Pabbaraju February 24, 2019

I have been trying to import user stories into JIRA but see an error that says that the user doesn't exist in JIRA. Though I made sure that the user is in JIRA and have access to that particular projects.

Could someone please help me on this?

Hi @Madhurima Pabbaraju ,

When you import user information, do you fill in Username or Full name?

Refer to the following article to see if it can solve your problem.

This worked. I have replaced Assignee names with 'Usernames' and not 'Full Name' and it go me through.

Thank you so much for this.

@Madhurima Pabbaraju ,

My guess for your problem:

  • In JIRA, the Full Name (First Name + Last Name) is displayed wherever user is referenced.
  • Users in JIRA are uniquely identified by their usernames and not by their Full Name. This means that two different users (usernames), can have same Full Name.
  • For Example : jsmith and john.smith despite being two different users, can have the same Full Name John Smith
  • I advice you to identify the user by their username and not by their Full Name

If you feel that this is not valid reason, please provide screenshot of the issue in which the user is referenced and another screenshot of the Administration->Users search filtered by the username/full name.
