Why does a change in rank in Advanced Roadmaps for an epics affect the ranking for other teams?

We have our Advanced Roadmap plan configured to group by teams. Some epics have child stories that span teams (ie story 1 is assigned to team A, story 2 is assigned to team B). So, the epic appears under both teams in the plan. The problem we found is that if Team A changes the rank of the epic under their team, the rank of the epic is also changed for Team B.

Is there a way for "shared" epics to be ranked separately by team? Note that the ranking number may be different if there are more/less epics in one team vs another, but the relative ranking seems to change.

Hi @David Wuth,

The thing is that this ranking thing is not relative - it is pretty absolute.

Essentially the ranking is a central concept behind the scenes that ranks literally all issues in Jira. Every issue has its own position in the list. And if you update that ranking (no matter how), you update the issue's position in that long and single list.

And so, indeed, a change in one plan does effect the ranking in the other plan too - simply because there aren't separate rankings.

@Walter Buggenhout I do not think your explanation is correct, at least in regards to plans. We have two plans with the same work and when we change the rank of an epic in one plan, it definitely does not change the rank in the other plan. But, your explanation does reflect the behavior we see in regards to a single view in one plan, with view settings grouped by teams. And, that same behavior is seen with multiple views in one plan - changes made to the ranking in one view affect the other views.

We really want teams to be able to set the rank of epics within their team, and not affect the ranking of other teams. The ranking ID is already different (rank 19 under one team, 26 in another team), so it seems technically possible.

Hey @David Wuth,

Aha, yes - you could be right that I'm wrong 😇. It appears that advanced roadmaps does indeed have its own ranking system now. Quite complex stuff, apparently. Did you have a look at the documentation on ranking issues?

There's quite a few factors that impact behaviour, so it seems worth diving into the nitty gritty details there.

That page has some very good info that I had not found. But, it is specific to data center - we are on cloud premium. When I clicked on cloud it took me to the cloud home page. This is the only page I could find for cloud users regarding ranking: https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/issue-ranking-in-advanced-roadmaps/

This definitely requires more digging... perhaps someone from Atlassian can chime in.
