I have a team-managed project on the free plan. When I create a task, it appears on the board, as expected. When I create an epic, or an issue within the epic, neither appears on the board.
If I open the epic filter on the board, the epic is listed. If I check the box, neither the epic nor its issue appears.
The only way I have found to see the epic and its issues is via the issue navigator.
The epic and its issue were not appearing on the Kanban board because the dedicated Backlog space feature was enabled.
Hi @Jeff Greenberg and welcome to the community,
In TMP epics appear either in the backlog via the epic panel
Or you can see them in the kanban board IF you group issues by Epic.

Hi Alex! Thanks for the greeting and assistance.
When I arrange by epic, the epic does not show, only the ticket with no epic assigned. The epic and its issue have a status To Do and are assigned, but do not appear in the To Do swim lane.
You can see, below, the top two issues in the issue list, and then the board.

@Jeff Greenberg epics without issues will not be visible. Once you add issues, the epic will appear.
