Will hiding a custom field delete previous data? Is it better to just remove field from screens?

CParHY November 23, 2021

We are using some custom fields configured with Elements Connect - and that connection/system is currently down, which is causing tickets using any of those fields, to fail to open.  If i hide, the Elements Connect fields temporarily, the tickets should open, but what will happen to the previously entered data when i show the fields again?  Will the data remain?  How does hiding a field differ from just removing it from visibility of a screen?

Hi @CParHY

As long as you don't delete the custom field, all the data will be retained even when you are hiding or removing fields from the screens.

Hi @Fabian Lim,

Thank you for the quick reply and confirmation of what should happen with the data.

I have now hidden the fields temporarily and that has made the difference in performance - the tickets are now loading and speed improved.  Once we're reconnected, i'll post the confirmation of this full process.  THANKS AGAIN!!

Happy to confirm that once our connection was repaired between JIRA and Elements connect db source that all data had been retained once the fields were shown again.

Hello

@Fabian Lim answer is perfectly correct.

If I may permit if you don't need the informations of the field and there is no retention for this particular information and you really want to speed up your platform it is recommanded to delete all unused fields since it clutter really fast a platform.

If you need to keep the I formation you can also take in consideration moving the content of the field into the description of each ticket! It should do the trick and allow you to delete the field without any problem!

Hope this can help!

Thank you @Florian PEREZ - fortunately no data was lost or in need of moving in this case, but for future reference, what would be your suggested mechanism for moving the content of a field into the description of each ticket?  is that a built-in "move" function of JIRA? or would you need something like scriptrunner?

To do this would need to use scriptrunner!

They're a script to do this thing you can easily found by googling it of in github!
