adding programs/initiatives to my existing classic projects in jira cloud

I use jira cloud.

We mainly use classic software/business projects across multiple teams as opposed to 'per-project'

I would like to capture program-level initiatives across the enterprise.

I have seen some people suggest simply adding a new custom issue type but that is not getting the hierarchy I am looking for.

Found this link - is this what I need? Is there more documentation/videos/information about this?

Hi @Stefanie Sullivan,

Yes, it is. Adding an extra issue type for program level initiatives is part of the process, but you are right: that alone does not enable the additional hierarchy and roll-up of planning, estimates and progress.

The link @Trudy Claspill shared about Advanced Roadmaps Cloud is the link to detailed documentation. The functionality is part of the Cloud Premium plan, should you be looking out for it.

It is worth mentioning that alternatives may exist via Marketplace apps as well. You could look into:

• Issue hierarchy / structure 
• PPM 

Most likely you want more than just extending your issue hierarchy. That usually is just a step into creating visibility into your portfolio in real time, extending into planning and reporting capabilities at some scale at least. It is a good idea to look into the cost and capabilities of some of the options and see what fits best to your needs.

You are correct. We are looking for more than just issue hierarchy and looking for visibility across the portfolio.

Sounds like Advanced Roadmaps is the way to go.

That is one possible solution. You can find quite a bit of additional information on Advanced Roadmaps by doing an internet search for "jira cloud advanced roadmaps". Here are a couple of the links I found.

Do you want to capture program level initiatives in order to plan a program increment (PI) or Scrum of Scrums?

If so, you could go for https://ativo.io/solutions/ - a Jira plugin for PI Plannings and Scrum of Scrums / Art Syncs.

Jira cloud is supported, as well as multiple teams per Jira project.
