automatically assign an Issue to a user, based on a specific status?

When a user changes the status of the ticket they are in, to a specific status, we want the developer assignee field to be mandatory.   In my researching I think this may require a transition.  Does anyone have any specifics on this?

What would be even better is if when the developer changes the status of the ticket (for example to Dev Start) the Developer assignee field be automatically updated with that person's name.   Is this possible?

Yep. Simple enough. You want to edit the transition in the workflow that is going into the status in question. You want to create a screen that includes the Assignee and associate the screen to the transition. You also want to require the Assignee field being updated using the Validate function associated w/ the transition. You can find good documentation on the Atlassian support site.

Thanks, it may be a couple days before I have enough time to work on this specifically. I do appreciate your offer. Working on transitions is new for me
