can I overwrite the description of a existing issue from excel?

I uploaded about 600 issues into jira from excel.  Then it was pointed out that I have the incorrect description for each one.

Can I fix my excelsheet with the correct description and re-upload to the existing task? If so, will it replace the description or just append to it?

Also does it matter if some of those tasks are in closed status?

Hi @ardian.krivca ,

Jira allows only 1 way communication, if you want to make changes on issues in Excel then send the update to Jira, you will need some 3rd party app.

I'm from the team behind Excel 365 Connector which allows issue modifications in Excel, you can: edit issues, create new ones, create tasks with subtask and much more.

Here you can check the documentation: Excel 365 Connector exporting issues

Thank you Lukasz, I think this is exactly what I need to do. I'll take a look.

*bonus points on the sound track in the video.  Sounds like the beginning of a action sequence.

Hi @ardian.krivca,

if you're open to solutions from the Atlassian Marketplace, you could also try JXL for Jira.

JXL is a full-fledged spreadsheet/table view for your issues that allows viewing and inline-editing all your issue fields. You can also bulk-edit your issue fields using copy/paste, just like you're familiar with from Excel.

So what you could do is to create a JXL "sheet" that matches your Excel sheet, and simply copy/paste the respective cells from Excel to JXL. You can do this for any number of issues in one action.

This is how this looks in action:

(Disclaimer: I work on JXL :)

Hope this helps,

Best,

Hannes

Hi @ardian.krivca

Yes - You can create a second import file.  You'll need the following fields as a minimum:

  • Issue Key
  • Summary
  • Description

The Description will be replaced.

I was able to import without errors. I realized it didnt update my existing ticket, but it created a new ticket.

Do I need to do anything else to make it update rather than create new?
